Tsunami sirens tested

2:57 pm on 7 April 2013

Tsunami sirens were tested in North and West Auckland, to remind residents what each noise sounds like and means.

Civil Defence conducted the exercise at midday on Sunday, running three sirens for a minute each with 15 second gaps in between.

The first siren signals the threat of a tsunami, and is used to get people off beaches.

The second tells everyone to get to higher ground immediately, and the third lets people know that any tsunami threat has passed.
