A driver taking part in a car rally at Hanmer Springs has been killed and his co-driver injured.

Police say the crash happened on a forestry road about 12.30pm on Saturday.

The 54-year-old man died at the scene.

Police say all other races on Saturday were cancelled and inquiries are continuing.

MotorSport New Zealand says its own officials are investigating the crash.

The organisation's president, Shayne Harris, has expressed his sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of the crash victims.

Saturday was the first day of the Straight 'n' Paint rally.
