Investigation into damage to fishing boat

1:01 pm on 15 May 2013

An investigation is being carried out after a fishing boat was apparently in a collision off East Cape.

Maritime New Zealand says a radio call was received from the vessel, The Commission, about 3am on Monday morning.

Spokesperson Steve Rendle says the boat sought a tow into Tauranga Harbour from another fishing boat after losing power and the use of its rudder.

Mr Rendle says bulk carrier Samjin which arrived in port on Tuesday was ordered to stop operations while it was investigated in relation to the incident.

He says it is now free to go, but an investigation is continuing.

The Commission will be met by Maritime New Zealand officials when it arrives in port.
