A man is dead and a mother of two is critically injured in hospital after a shooting east of Kaitaia on Sunday.
A 38-year-old man handed himself into the police over the incident and will be appearing in the Kaitaia District Court on Monday charged with murder.
Police say the man knew the victims.
Nobody else was at the Fairburn Road property at the time of the shooting.
The critically injured woman was flown to Whangarei Hospital where she remains in intensive care.
Twenty-two police officers are investigating the incident and are asking for anybody with information to come forward.
