A head-on collision between two motorcycles on a remote rural road in North Canterbury has left one rider dead and the other seriously injured.

Police have named the dead man as Craig Gordon Pickering, who was 21, a dairy farmer from Balmoral.

The motorcyclists collided head-on while riding on Cascade Road west of Culverden at about 10pm on Saturday.

They were flown to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter, but Mr Pickering died on the way.

The other man, who hasn't been named yet, remains in intensive care, but his injuries aren't thought to be life-threatening.

Constable Phil Woods of the Culverden police says the two men had been at a party when they decided to go for a ride on motocross bikes.

He says the bikes didn't have lights and neither man was wearing a helmet.
