Police in Wellington have charged a 23-year-old man with aggravated burglary and assault with a weapon after he was stabbed in the suburb of Kilbirnie on Tuesday night.
The man, and a male accomplice, entered a property on Rodrigo Road wearing masks and carrying a knife.
During the ensuing altercation, one of the occupants received minor injuries while one of the intruders required surgery for multiple stab wounds at Wellington Hospital.
At a bedside court hearing on Friday, the man was remanded in custody and will re-appear in Wellington District Court on June 14.
Police say a decision about charges against the occupant who stabbed the 23-year-old is yet to be made.
They say some occupants of the property and the offender are known to each other and it was an isolated incident.
