Industrial waste threat to sewerage system

12:41 pm on 13 June 2013

Wellington City Council is on the hunt for a phantom dumper disposing of hundreds of litres of highly toxic waste into the sewerage system.

The council says someone has been dumping industrial waste into the system in the suburb of Karori for months.

Capicity Infrastructure Services spokesperson Alex van Paassen says the organic waste similar to the contents of a septic tank or the wash from a cow shed is being flushed through the system about twice a month.

Mr van Paassen says a big enough load could shut down the treatment plant and, if that happened, waste may need to be flushed into the ocean. He says it is important the perpetrator is caught.
