Waterway plans ignore kayakers says watersports group

A watersports group is concerned potential new plans for Canterbury waterways will ignore recreational river users.

Consultation is underway on the Canterbury Water Management Strategy, which aims to come up with ways to store water for use in the summer, while incorporating values such as biodiversity.

Whitewater New Zealand conservation officer Doug Rankin says because some groups are mostly made up of farmers, the needs of kayakers aren't being taken into account.

The Regional Water Management Committee says the recommendations could change if it's provided with enough relevant data to show how well-used certain rivers are.
