Diesel spill in Southland river contained

Southland's regional council says less diesel and rubbish than originally thought spilled into the Makarewa River following a truck crash on Thursday night.

The truck and trailer carrying a week's municipal waste from Mataura, crashed on the bridge over the Makarewa River. The driver escaped unhurt.

Initial reports suggested that up to 150 litres of diesel and five tonnes of rubbish had spilled into the river.

But regional council's spokesperson Graeme McKenzie says much less appears to have been lost.

He says a boom has caught much of the fuel and estimates between 250kg and 500kg of rubbish spilled.

Mr McKenzie says the spill is not threatening public reticulated water supplies but could have some impact on some rural stock water intakes.

The vehicle was removed from the river on Friday.
