One of New Zealand's largest forest companies says the closure of State Highway 35 north of Ruatoria is having a major effect on its logging operations.

The highway has been closed to all traffic since Sunday night due to a major subsidence about 6km north of the town.

Ernslaw One has four forestry crews harvesting trees north of Ruatoria.

North Island Manager Bill Johnstone says the company will have to re-locate them if the highway is closed to heavy vehicles for any length of time.

The New Zealand Transport agency says the road will open on Wednesday afternoon for cars, on a strictly controlled basis for a short spell each hour. It won't be open at night until at least Saturda
