Flood risk has passed in Hamilton

5:01 pm on 16 August 2008

The Waikato Regional Council says it is confident the flood risk to houses in Hamilton has passed.

Heavy rains and controlled releases of water from the Karapiro Dam have lifted the level of the Waikato River to just shy of 16m but it has stopped rising.

A spokesperson for the regional council, Adam Munro, says the levels will remain high for some time but he does not expect they will cause any problems now.

Mr Munro says he is pleased the rain is clearing, and no more large rain systems are forecast for the river's catchment area.
