Waikato Tainui signs agreement with Canadian group

Waikato Tainui were due to sign a memorandum of understanding with one of Canada's most prominent first nation groups on Tuesday.

The Squamish nation of 3,500 people, whose ancestral home is around Vancouver in British Columbia, received a $120 million settlement in 2000 from the Canadian federal government.

The tribe's asset base includes a huge marina in downtown Vancouver.

Tainui executive chairperson Tukoroirangi Morgan told Waatea News the agreement between the tribes reinforces Waikato Tainui's strategic plan.

He says a delegation visited the Squamish people last year, and says the principles that drive them are similar to those of Waikato Tainui.
