Auckland City Council is to spend more than $50 million on a 40 metre bridge as part of a plan to revitalise the waterfront area.

The bridge which will open and close to allow boats to pass underneath will connect downtown Auckland with the Wynyard Quarter precinct.

It will be known as Te Whero. The price has risen almost $20 million in a matter of months.

The design was a collaborations between three companes based in Wellington, Melbourne and the United Kingdom.

The council says it will apply for a New Zealand Transport Agency subsidy to help fund it.
