Fire damaged house at risk of collapse

The Fire Service says the remains of a house destroyed in a blaze is at risk of collapsing.

Crews remained at the property in Barnard Street in the northern suburb of Wadestown dampening down hotspots on Wednesday night.

At its height, 12 fire engines and nearly 50 firefighters were battling the blaze which began at 3pm.

Assistant area commander Dave Key said strong winds also sent embers flying, starting a scrub fire below the house but that is under control.

Homes either side of the two-storey house had to be evacuated at the peak of the fire. Twelve engines and a helicopter with a monsoon bucket were used to put it out.

Services on the nearby Johnsonville rail line that were affected have resumed on Wednesday evening.
