Deadline passes for feedback on Tamaki housing project

Friday was the deadline for feedback on a blueprint for a major urban redevelopment in the Auckland suburb of Tamaki.

The Government project, the largest of its kind, extends over the next 25 years and includes the building of an extra 6000 houses.

Housing Minister Nick Smith says more than half of the 5000 Housing New Zealand-owned homes in the suburb are old, cold and mouldy, and more are needed.

However, he says the project also aims to provide better educational opportunities, more jobs, and better health facilities.

Tamaki is home to 18,000 people, and includes the suburbs of Glen Innes, Point England and Panmure.
