The condition of a man found outside Christchurch hospital on Saturday night with multiple stab wounds is being described as critical but stable.

He remains in hospital awaiting surgery.

Detective Sergeant Hamish Wilson said the man, 33, appears to have been the victim of a very personal and callous attack.

He said police have worked throughout the weekend in an effort to identify and locate the person or people responsible.

They believe the attack is gang related.

A scene examination is being conducted at an address on the outskirts of Christchurch.
