Police say they are continuing to treat the death of a person whose body was found in a burning car in Otago on Monday as unexplained.
Acting Detective Inspector Colin Blackie says the body has been removed from the scene near the small township of Waihola and a post-mortem is expected to be carried out in Dunedin on Tuesday afternoon.
Mr Blackie says it could be a number of days before the person is formally identified as forensics and dental records will need to be used.
A scene examination by ESR staff from Christchurch is likely to be completed on Tuesday afternoon.
Police are still interested in hearing from anyone who saw a red Ford Focus hatchback travelling on State Highway 1 between Henley-Berwick Road and Titri Road early on Tuesday morning.
