Museums learn Christchurch quake lessons

Art gallery owners and museum curators in the top of the South Island are looking to Christchurch for help on how to protect their valuable collections.

After the recent earthquakes near Seddon, cultural institutions in the region are keen to learn how best to preserve their displays.

Of the 12,500 items in the hands of the Canterbury Museum, just 188 were damaged or broken in the 2010/2011 earthquakes.

Museum director Anthony Wright puts that down to the hard work of his staff.

Mr Wright says his staff have been holding a series of workshops around the country to assist other museums in earthquake-proofing their collections.
