Dust explosion sparks factory fire

6:26 am on 4 September 2013

Fire crews put out a large fire caused by a dust explosion at a factory near Taupo on Tuesday night.

The fire service says local crews went to the Nature's Flame factory in Rotokawa after an alarm was triggered about 9pm.

The factory makes wood fuel pellets.

Fire service spokesperson Jaron Phillips says a large explosion occurred as some of the crews arrived, setting fire to two hoppers full of sawdust.

At the fire's peak, a dozen fire crews were at the scene from as far away as Rotorua and Turangi.

Mr Phillips says no-one was in the building and there are no reports of injuries.
