Steven Boskell, of Palmerston, appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Friday afternoon, charged with murdering Mr McFarlane with another or others.

Mr Boskell was remanded in custody to reappear at the High Court at Timaru on 1 October.

Police have said Mr McFarlane's injuries indicate his death was violent. They also believe Mr McFarlane knew his killer, or killers, and the incident was not a random act.

About 40 police staff have been working on the case.
