Firefighters have put out a big blaze at a two-storey house in a central Wellington suburb.

Nine fire trucks as well as an aerial appliance were called to the house, on Raroa Road in Aro Valley, from about 6:15pm on Saturday.

Wellington Central fire station senior officer Brett Lockyer says when the crews arrived the house was well alight.

He says fast work got the fire under control and out within about an hour's time, avoiding any damage to neighbouring properties which, he says, were under serious threat.

Mr Lockyer says one person in the lower level escaped with minor smoke inhalation.

There is significant damage to the top floor of the house.
