People living near a West Auckland level crossing want barrier arms installed after a woman and three children were hurt when their car collided with a train on Monday morning.
The crash happened just after 10am on a level crossing on Taupaki Road.
All those in the car were taken to hospital. The woman and a seven-year-old girl remain in hospital in a stable condition.
Nicola Burnett, who lives next to the level crossing, says the crossing has lights and bells, but visibility is poor and there should be barrier arms.
She says a man died at the crossing in 1993 when his car also collided with a train.
But Kiwirail says the road traffic isn't enough to justify barriers and the crossing is not in line for an upgrade.
A spokesperson says drivers need to be aware of lights and bells when they approach a level crossing.
The road has now been opened after an investigation by the Serious Crash Unit.
