Capital has 'remarkable escape' from windstorm

The Wellington City Council says the city has had a remarkable escape from the windstorm that whipped through the capital on Monday.

The council's civil defence manager, Bruce Pepperell, says the city has come through the storm very well.

He says it wasn't as bad as the storm that hit the city in June, but how someone wasn't injured or indeed killed when a construction site scaffold collapsed on Willis St is amazing. The street through the centre of the city has since been reopened.

Mr Pepperell says the Fire Service got 300 callouts on Monday, compared with 2000 during the June storm.
