Police in Wanaka are still looking for an unidentified object that smashed through a car windscreen and out the back window, killing the driver, near the town on Thursday.

The 22-year-old man died instantly, but a woman in the passenger seat was uninjured and managed to steer the Subaru Legacy stationwagon to a halt.

The crash happened about 12km from Wanaka on State Highway 6 on the Lake Hawea-Albert Town Road at 6.25am.

Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron says the passenger saw a white ute coming the other way at about the time of the accident and police want to hear from the driver.

Mr Cameron says officers have been searching the roadside for the object, but have so far found nothing that could have led to the crash.

All motorists travelling along the Lake Hawea-Albert Town Road will be stopped and questioned near the scene of the crash on Friday morning.
