Auckland has been named in the Lonely Planet guide's top 10 cities to visit.

Paris is ranked No. 1 on the list released on Tuesday morning, followed by Trinidad, Cape Town, the Latvian capital Riga, and Zurich. Auckland is at 10th place after Adelaide.

Lonely Planet is praising revitalised parts of Auckland like Wynyard Quarter, City Works Depot and Britomart.

The guidebook's Asia-Pacific marketing director Chris Zeiher says such redevelopment is key to Auckland making the list.

He says the city is now seen as a destination, not just a gateway to other areas.

Auckland Council's tourism arm says the city has been recognised for its cuisine, culture and coastal scenery.

Christchurch (2013) and Wellington (2011) have made the list in earlier years.

The West Coast has made it into another Lonely Planet list of the world's top ten regions and is ranked eighth.
