Police on the West Coast believe a 15-year-old boy, who has been missing since Wednesday afternoon, may be hitchhiking his way to Otago.

Liam Stirling was on a bus travelling from Haast to Greymouth, but got off when it stopped at Paringa.

A police spokesperson says they are continuing to ask for sightings of the teenager and believe he is making his way to Dunedin or Mosgiel.

And the spokesperson also says the physical search for a French national missing on the West Coast for at least a week is on hold.

Yohan Simon, 32, was due to be collected by a friend Monday 21 October after a three day tramp, but never showed up.

The spokesperson says police now believe he may have walked out of the bush, and are appealing for any sightings.
