Trust shocked by mountain bike plan

An Auckland Conservation group says it is gobsmacked the Department of Conservation is still planning to allow mountain bikers on Rangitoto and Motutapu islands.

DoC is proposing to allow an independent operator to provide guided tours of the protected islands on mountain bikes, as part of the Conservation Management Strategy.

The department received 18 submissions on the proposal earlier this year, 12 of which supported the move.

However, Motutapu Restoration Trust chair Christine Fletcher says it will put endangered birds at risk and it is a foolish idea by a desperate department trying to generate revenue.

DoC says it will not be actively promoting the mountain bike tours.
