Concern after schoolgirls' sudden deaths

8:55 pm on 12 November 2013

The sudden deaths of two girls from a Hastings high school in the past 10 days have prompted meetings with health professionals and local leaders worried about self-harm.

The Hawke's Bay District Health Board says the deaths of the 15-year-olds who went to Flaxmere College do not appear to be linked, but it will be monitoring the school closely.

In a statement on Tuesday, Flaxmere College principal Louise Anaru said it was a very difficult time and lots of support was being given to students, staff and family.

Hastings deputy mayor Cynthia Bowers said it is especially distressing now that exams are on.

"Exams are a really stressful time for students and teachers, without having a tragedy like this happen. Of course, it's just a horrible time for everyone involved really. Our role as a council is to make sure that there is adequate support in place."
