Police in Thames are investigating a suspicious death on Sunday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to a house in Queen Street after reports a man, 49, had collapsed.
Police said it appears four people were drinking at the house during the day when a dispute broke out.
They say one man sustained head injuries and fell to the ground unconscious.
He was admitted to Waikato hospital in a critical condition but died a few hours later.
A man was arrested at the scene and charged with assaulting two women and is to appear in the Hamilton District Court on Monday.
A post mortem will be held on Monday.
