Card skimmers strike Auckland ATMs

11:10 am on 23 November 2013

Police are looking for two suspects, possibly from Canada, in relation to a card-skimming case in the Auckland area.

Counterfeit cards have been used on seven ATMs around Auckland and a skimming device was placed on a machine in Mt Eden on Tuesday morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Aaron Pascoe says the counterfeit cards originate from Canada and those using them have taken thousands of dollars, including $800 in a single transaction.

He says the counterfeit cards started appearing the day after the card-skimming device was installed and the people who were using the cards have been caught on security footage.

"One of the people that have been seen using the cards looks very similar in appearance to the person who installed the skimming device and because of the timing of the use of those counterfeit cards I think that they're linked.

Detective Senior Sergeant Pascoe said it's likey the suspects are foreign nationals, although not necessarily from Canada.
