Hepatitis A outbreak declared over

Health authorities say the hepatitis A outbreak in mid-Canterbury is over, largely thanks to a major community effort.

The outbreak began in April this year, with four adults and a child hospitalised over the following months.

Mass vaccination clinics were held in October to vaccinate preschoolers against the highly contagious virus.

Canterbury medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey says the clinics and other measures, including hand-washing campaigns and vaccination of food-handling staff in local businesses, have worked.

Dr Humphrey says he is confident that the outbreak has ended because there have been more than two incubation periods since the last notified case.
