Jurors deciding the case of seven men charged with trying to hoodwink electoral authorities into registering extra voters in a South Auckland electorate have retired for the night on Friday.
Daljit Singh, a real-estate agent, Justice of the Peace and senior member of the Supreme Sikh Council, unsuccessfully stood for a seat on the Otara-Papatoetoe local board in the 2010 super-city campaign.
Mr Singh and six others are on trial in the High Court at Auckland charged with a total of 38 counts of using a forged document.
The Crown says they sent the personal details of 116 voters to authorities and registered them to the area where Mr Singh was standing. It says some of those registered lived in India, Timaru and Tauranga.
The jurors retired to consider their verdict on Friday morning after Justice Woolford finished summing up the case.
