5:48 pm on 7 December 2013

A man being sought in relation to the attempted abduction of a 13-year-old girl in a South Canterbury town has appeared in court.

Police say an attempt was made to abduct the Timaru girl as she was cycling along State Highway 8 on Tuesday.

They say 20-year-old Blaine Ross Hughes of Washdyke was arrested at 6am on Saturday thanks to information received from a member of the public. He was in a four-wheel-drive vehicle reported stolen last week.

Mr Hughes appeared in the Timaru District Court on Saturday charged with unlawful taking and injuring with intent to injure and was remanded in custody to 19 December.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill says further charges are likely.
