A Bay of Plenty iwi says a recently signed Treaty settlement will allow it to speed up its affordable housing programme.
Deputy chair of Nga Potiki a Tamapahore Trust Victoria Kingi says the settlement returned 20 hectares of a 40-hectare block in Papamoa.
She says the rest of the land was allocated to the Waitaha nui a Hei iwi in its Treaty settlement, and the two tribes will now work with the Government and the local community to develop affordable housing.
Ms Kingi says the project adds to work already under way or completed, with the iwi having built 22 whanau homes in the region this year and construction of another 26 homes scheduled next year.
She says there will also be trade-training opportunities for young Maori, as well as jobs.
