Wellington swimmer rescued

6:21 pm on 23 December 2013

A young Lower Hutt man has been flown to Wellington Hospital suffering from hypothermia after he tried to swim from Petone to Matiu-Somes Island.

Life Flight crewman Dave Greenberg says the man, who is in his early 20s, was one of a group of four who set off from Petone late on Monday morning.

Mr Greenberg says the man was separated from two of the group but a kayaker stayed with him and flagged down a boat, which took the man to the wharf at Somes Island, where he was treated by DOC staff and an off-duty ambulance officer.

Mr Greenberg says the man was flown to Wellington Hospital in a serious but non-life-threatening condition with a body temperature of about 31°C.
