Boxing Day headlines: Ship trapped in pack ice in Antarctica; biggest retail day of the year; and another fire on Banks Peninsula.

NZ Herald

The New Zealand Herald says four New Zealanders are believed to be on a ship trapped in pack ice in an area of the Antarctic notorious for severe weather.

Three rescue ships with icebreaking capability are on their way to try to free their ship, but will not reach it until Friday night at the earliest.

The Press

The Press reports on a fire that destroyed about six hectares of tussock on Department of Conservation land at Godley Head.

Fresh empty fireworks cases were found nearby, but DoC has given up trying to catch the people responsible. It says the fire was one of two within three days on Banks Peninsula.

Waikato Times

'Retailers brace for Boxing Day' is the headline in The Waikato Times. 'Bind and dive' it says. Assume the low body position because it's ruck and mall time on the biggest retail day of the year.

Dominion Post

'Mexican heatwave' is the headline in The Dominion Post which pictures revellers enjoying the sea in Oriental Bay in red sombreros in perfect festive weather in the capital on Wednesday.

ODT

The Otago Daily Times says it was a different story in Dunedin where it was one of the wettest Christmas Days in years - but French Canadians Heloise Desrochers and Camille Messier who spent it in a tent say it was ' positively tropical ' for them.

Back in Montreal temperatures were as low as minus 30 degrees celsius.
