The Gisborne District Council says great water savings during weekend mean there is unlikely to be any disruption to the horticultural processing industry.

Engineers reconnected the town's main water supply pipe at the weekend and are now slowly increasing pressure on the welded section of the pipeline to check for leaks, which may take a few more days.

Council deputy chief executive Peter Higgs said Gisborne people achieved fantastic water savings at the weekend, keeping under the target.

Adding to the challenge is water use by the horticultural industry resuming on Sunday, which will continue to increase over the next couple of weeks as processing ramps up.

Mr Higgs said one of the aims when planning the repair of the broken pipe was to avoid any disruption to industry, and at this stage that would be achieved.
