Houses have been evacuated and police are asking nearby residents to stay indoors as firefighters deal with a major fire in Kaiti Beach in Gisborne on Tuesday night.
A fire spokesperson says the blaze is in Titirangi Park and has spread up a cliff towards residential properties.
Fire crews have set up a perimeter around the houses and nine fire engines and four helicopters have been called in.
The fire is now under control, but houses in Oxford Street, Norwood Road and Turanga Street were evacuated as a precaution.
