Women in central Auckland attacked

8:55 pm on 17 January 2014

Police are looking for a man they say is responsible for at least some of the sex attacks on women on the streets of Auckland's inner-city suburbs.

Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Florence says there have been six indecent assaults in Ponsonby and Freeman's Bay in the 12 months to November last year, some by a man described as a light-skinned Maori or Polynesian.

The incidents involved women walking alone. Mr Florence says on each occasion the man spoke to the women before grabbing and assaulting them.

He says while officers don't know if the same man is responsible for all the attacks, at least four are linked and are asking other women who may have been attacked to come forward.

"There's enough information from this to concern us that the person may strike again, and that they could escalate."

Mr Florence says the man is in his late teens or early 20s, slightly built and short, with noticeably big eyes and short cropped hair.
