A seven-year-old boy has died after a hole he was digging collapsed on him at a Northland beach.
Witnesses say the boy was digging in the sand at Pataua South, just north of Whangarei.
St John Northland operations manager Tony Devanney says medical staff tried to resuscitate him at the scene after sand collapsed around him.
He says the boy is believed to be a local.
