Evacuation after gas main ruptured

3:14 pm on 12 March 2014

Firefighters in Hamilton are going through evacuated shops with gas detection equipment after a main line was ruptured.

A Fire Service spokesperson said a digger hit the gas main in the Hamilton suburb of Glenview.

Shops were evacuated and students ordered to stay on the grounds at three schools in the suburb, and a medical centre and pharmacy were among the shops evacuated.

Road cordons were set up around Urlich Road but have now been lifted, along with the restrictions on students.
