Lower fares mooted in Auckland

The head of Auckland Transport wants lower fares on commuter services now the agency has completed a rollout of an electronic ticket system.

The agency says the introduction of a single electronic ticket for all public transport services over 16-months went relatively smoothly, especially compared with problems faced in Australia.

Chairman Lester Levy said the new technology is just the first step, which will be followed by new fare zones and options such as an unlimited one-day pass.

Dr Levy said simpler fares zones may be finalised next month, and he believes lower fares are also needed to boost patronage.

A significant cut will probably need financial support from Auckland Council, which already subsidises ticket prices.
