A man has died after a four wheel drive vehicle rolled while on a hunting trip in North Canterbury.

The incident happened in McDonald's Downs near Hawarden on Friday morning.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter pilot Stuart Farquhar said it appears the vehicle rolled while the occupants were attempting to drive up a very steep and slippery track.

He said the driver, 55, was dead when the Westpac Rescue Helicopter arrived at the site, and a 15 year-old boy was treated for moderate to minor injuries.
