One of the biggest colleges in the top of the South Island has closed its school hall due to earthquake risk.

Nelson Boys College made the decision after receiving a report on the building's seismic standards.

The hall can seat up to 1200 pupils.

Headmaster Gary O'Shea said they decided to shut the hall as they don't want to put the boys at risk, however remote the chance.

He said the strengthening work is expected to cost about $100,000 and it's hoped to have the hall re-opened next term.
