A Hawke's Bay man who died after crashing his Ferrari is estimated to have been driving 190 kilometres per hour at the time.

Andrew Bass, 61, was taking part in the Hawke's Bay Club's annual track day at the Taupo Motorsport Park when he crashed his 360 Spider into a wall of tyres on Monday afternoon.

A male passenger escaped unharmed.

Taupo Motorsport Park general manager Ian Bowater said Mr Bass lost control of his car while travelling at high speeds.

He said it was the first fatality at the track and safety precautions at the park are very stringent.

Hawke's Bay Club vice-president Pat Horgan said the crash is a tragic accident.

Mr Horgan said Mr Bass had been a member of the club for sometime and had recently rejoined after returning from Australia.

He said Mr Bass was with a group of friends from the club and was doing what he loved.
