The group says the crosses, which are topped with helmets, symbolise the friends and family the council has failed to keep safe on Auckland's roads.

Spokesperson Jeff Harrison says many people are scared to bike in Auckland.

He says they want to see separated cycle lanes and protective barriers at intersections added to the plans to upgrade Karangahape Road in the central city.

Mr Harrison says they are hoping to encourage people to make a submission on the development.

Submissions close on Wednesday.

Christchurch Council cops cyclist flack too

Meanwhile a cycling advocate says he is shattered by how little money Christchurch City Council has allocated to cycling in its draft annual plan.

More than 400 submissions on the council's draft annual plan will be considered over the next three days.

Canterbury Cyclists' Association spokesperson Dirk De Lu says allocating only $2.1 million out of the $372 million transport budget is a fail.

Mr De Lu says 15 percent of the city's population use bikes for transport and 15 percent of the total budget is only fair.
