Grave fears after tramper swept away

7:30 pm on 20 May 2014

Police have grave fears for a woman swept away while trying to cross a swollen stream on the Milford Track in the South Island.

The 22-year-old tramper was walking the track with her Australian partner and was swept into the Clinton River when crossing Pompolona Creek about 3.30pm on Monday.

Her partner activated a locater beacon, but a rescue helicopter sent in on Monday night had to turn back due to poor weather.

Searches by land and air on Tuesday failed to show any sign of the woman and a decision will be made on Wednesday morning on whether to continue looking for her.
