AA members cool on road charges

The Automobile Association says a new survey of its members suggests Auckland Council may have a hard job winning support for new road charges.

The AA questioned its members about their willingness to pay some of the extra $200 million a year needed to fund major transport projects in Auckland.

It says the survey found members like ideas such as a motorway toll, but a third of them think they will never need to pay it.

Spokesperson Barney Irvine says initial support for necessary transport infrastructure, and its associated charges, began to weaken when those costs were explained.
