The Serious Fraud Office has begun an investigation into the activities of the Far North District Council.

And the council said the inquiry had its full support.
Mayor John Carter, who was elected in October, said the council engaged an independent consultant after the elections to look into its finances.
He said the inquiry was then referred to the Serious Fraud Office.
Mr Carter said the SFO could investigate the affairs of any person it suspected may have committed serious or complex fraud. He said beyond that, he could not comment.
