Shallow earthquake shakes Dunedin

Dunedin has been shaken by shallow a magnitude 4 earthquake tonight.

The quake occurred at 6.44pm, 30 km west of the city at a depth of 5 km.

A worker at a hotel just outside of Dunedin said the quake shook the entire building and knocked items off the walls.

Gin Falloon, who was working at the Outram Hotel said guests got quite a shock.

"The whole place shook, so I went downstairs to the bar and everyone was standing a bit shellshocked and thinking that there might have been a crash."

She said she could not see any damage.

GNS Science described the quake as being of strong intensity.
